INDIAN WELL-POISONERS.
SEVERE PUNISHMENT FOR SEDI-
TIOIV MONGERS. Lahore, May 22. Wild excitement prevails at Hasan Abdal, a village near Rawal-pindi, in consequence of a .•.tatement that there is no such disease as the plague, but the Government has been despatching emissaries throughout the l'unjnuh to poison the drinking wells, thereby killing 100,000 wceklv.
The police have succeeded. in tracing this statement to a Hindu, who has bee l .' sentenced to two years' rigorous imprisonment and fined £32. An accomplice, who actually dropped mysterious balls into the wells, alleging that he did so by the order of the Government, has been sentenced to eighteen months' rig-
orous imprisonment. These reports of well-poisoning by the Government have been in circulation for ii long time, seriously menacing public tranquility, but hitherto the police have been unable to discover their origin.
