HOCKEY.

MA.NAY\ATU v. WAIRARAPA.

(Special to News.)

Palmerston X., July 10. The first representative hockey match of the season was played here to-day between Wairarapa and Marawatu, and resulted in a win for Maiiawalit by three goals to nil. The visitors opened with two of the representative forwards absent, but it is doubtful if they made much difference in the final result. The game was very fast and open, and was characterised by determined forward rushes on both sides. A feature of Mauawalu's play was Hie sound defence of the backs. Adams was brilliant amongst the. full backs, and B. Eraser and Soretison stood out in the half-line. Tnit and Webb, the wing forwards, played hard, unselfish games. Donald (centre half) and TTall (goal), Carley and Winter (forwards) were prominent in the Wairarapa team.
