Opposite Webster Bros." mart it coliided with an express, the horse eventually coming down, and capsizing the gig. The horse was extricated unharmed from the wreckage of tile gig, which belonged to Messrs Sole Bros. The horse escaped with no further injury than the loss of a little hair and hide. The Borough Council last night resolved that it would not undertake the maintenance of the town clock until the striking power shall have been considerably increased. And a few minutes later it was placed on record, the Mayor seconding pro forma, tlut the hands of the I clock were visible only at a very short distance, and a complaint will be sent on to the Postmaster-General Cr. Mills complained that he could not see the hands at night even at a distance of 4(10 yards. The town clock was again dragged across the lloor of the chamber just as the bell rang out its nine strokes, | and Cr. Jioon suggested that the fault mentioned by Cr. Alills might be remedied by doubling the amount of electric light used in illuminating the clock face. The matter was referred to the Electric Light. Committee. The draughts match, Town v. Country, took place at Leppertou on the evening of July 4. Ainsworlh wen- appointed delegates to 1 attend the meeting of the Friendly Societies' Association on the lSlli inst. -Mr MiLs introduced his resolution last night at the Borough Council ineet- _ ing condemning the "round about mct hod" in which the business of the Council is conducted, lie considered the call on the time of the Councillors and of • the sta/i was altogether too heavy. For instance, up to the time he had given notice of this motion he had received in two months 05 communications from the Town Clerk's office. Of these no less than twenty were notices to attend meetings, and the majority of the meetings were merely to discus's matters that had already been before the Council. A I lot of the correspondence was simply rubbish. The Councillors were kept posted in what they had already done, but got no indication of new business until they came to the Council table. Should the Council take his view of the matter he was prepared to move for the setting up of a committee to investigate with a view of simplifying and expediting business. Several councillors considered that the Council's methods were hardly capable of improvement, particularly clinging to the tact that the system of sending typewritten copies of minutes in order to save time in reading these at meetings; and in sending a precis of outI ward correspondence to obviate the nej cessity for reading the letters at the I meetings. After nearly half an hour's discussion, Cr. Collis seconded the resolution, with the addition of a clause setting up a committee. The debate broke out afresh, ami eventually the Council declined to alter the tenor of their way. * The Town Clerk complained that Cr. Mills' reference to "rubbish" was a re- , llection on the statT. Cr. Mills explained that most of the pabulum sent to I him as a Councillor was "rubbish" as far as he was concerned.
