The Government's Colonial friends, lie said, were aware that the decision on preferential trade was a foregone conclusion after last election. Mr Lyttelton's motion deceived nobody, and would only afford protectionists a cheap advertisement, and probably stimulate the | Liberals to hold the fort of free tnule and press forward for the social and political reforms which the colonies already 1 enjoyed.
