Irycr also crossed the line ncir the Ilig, and attempted to run behind .lie posts. In doing SO U'rigley char-cd biin, and took the ball from him. In the second spell, with the wind against theni, the Blacks showed mark- ■ cd superiority, especially iu scrimmaging and forward play. Keeping the ball on the ground, they worked it up and then opened out, letting llunter, Mynott and company gel/ to work. Jn this way Fryer and Coluian again scored, making the total 1!). For Wellington, Em*on kicked a splendid goal from a mark at half way, and just at the very close, from a still" scrimmage near the corner Hag, a rinh I got over, and secured the only try they < obtained- ] The linal was thus 1!) to 0. I 'lhe New Zealand team, as playing to- 1 day, seemed rather light. Of the new men, Col man and Fryer are pretty sure to become prominent players. The Southern division team has b-en tc picked to meet Xhf Northerners in '.lie en trial match, aiul the selectors appear to in haw done very well, lluwcra have lour 'li players, l'atea four, Wuimaie three, Okaiawa and Upuiiake two. The forwards picked are fast and heavy, and u should have no diilieulty in lioldug ''' lheir own against the .Northerners, but '• the backs are not so strong as hitherto. ™ L'hu date and ground are not yet known, | and seeing that two more games nave yet to lie decided it will be well 011 ill illL- month before the match eventuates. Okaiawa, la»t year's Southern chainpions, are making up the leeway in championship points, in the lirst round they defeated ilawera.. then the leading {] . team, and li>t Saturday they had a win | ngain-i i'atea. who up liil then had es- ( | ( tablished a lead. Wamiatu drawing with Ilawera places the latter te'lm p and Tate.i level, with lioth Waiinate n and Okaiawa close up. W- A \V. but -I unly man. and a guod scorI ing tlui e ((nailer, and la.-t \ear w;i s considered unlucky iu not gelling a game in the t,;.:! match. r, liurke. the Waii'iale captain and li t i< i"hlh. has been showing g"od form d this season, and many will regret 1 hat II be is not available for the trial or rep. U. matches. Three seasons ago Burke was
tho Taranaki tlir?equarter line, and this season was playing right at the top of his best fonii. [. the news that Alf. Bayly is far from being well is to lie regretted. Mr Ilayly is wi'll know n. and recognised as ouo '. of the giants who assisted in making Taranaki one of the strongest football eeni res in the colony, lie has taken part in many a hotly-contested game, and some of these trials must have effected his constitution, i'l-obably one of the hardest games lie took part in was lhe play-off between Opunake and Stratford at Ilawera seven years aii'o. Ilayly captained Stratford and W. limbic Opunake. At the conclusion of two l.Vs no score was m ule, and piny eontinned another minutes. Again thenwas no score and a further 'JO minutes played, and darkness Slopped proceedings with honors even. It wis a hard, keenly contested game, and severely tested the stamina of players on either side. It is to be hoped tilat we - lall soon hear of his speedy recovery to health. In the Northern division there are a number of young players, especially in the forward and wing forward ranks, that this scribe hopes will b.' considcT«r3i.v the selectors. There* has in the past been 100 much selection on past reputation, and it is about lime ihil >. speedy and dashing young pi ivcrs who
tram consistently should be given iu encouragement that many of the "ro|>>! In lion" pl.ivers—the majority ot wlioo: are now "pointers" and gallery menhave ceased to merit. ASSOCIATION. Association football has gone ahead well at Hav.'cra and Kaponga, but seems to have dragged somewhat in Klthani. 'lhe games contested are an improvement on last year, there being a better understanding of the liner points of the game by players. Ilawera A are bidding tin; lead anil are assured tho championship, whilst) the 1! team (mostly youths) are running second', Kaponga lias also two teams going. >-vl the A' s look to have a chance, of gaining second honors in the championship. Eltlmin, last, year's champions, have won one match and lost five, and seemingly have not found capable substitutes for (,'rabtree, Ulaister and Hutchinson, who have all left tile district. Auroa has a team in the competition which gave Ilawera A a hard game and succeeded in making a draw, one goal each. I'layers are wondering whether any rep. lixtures will lie played in the Southern district this season.
