THE POET'S CORNER.

THE WORLD AS A MIRROR. —o \ They Bay this is a gloomy world Kiit no! that cannot be; The earth is bright with summer smiles, And beautiful lo see. I 1 gaze on hills and meadows bright, With bush and verdine green; And then upon the rippling sea, Whose beauties reigns as queen. 1 gaze upon the skies so blue Lit with (tod's lamps above, .Shining to guide the wanderer—■ Bright beacons of His love. I hour the happy birds rejoice Among the leafy trees, My heart is full of happiness, And joyful melodies. The flow'rets hang their drea'iiy heads, Their eyes the daisies fold; 'l'he dews arc softly falling On buttercups of gold. The children all are merry, They romp and shout in play; And half in grief, 1 ponder It is their happiest day. For soon with age their playing Will end, life's light begin, For wealth, or fame, or honor; Till Death's last night sets in. But wealth, what will it bring them? Will it redeem their soul? Will the great Judge have.mercy? And will they reach their goal? Yes; if they use His "bounty, To help the weak and poor; To feed His hungry children That famish by their door. And if with loving kindness They scatter good around, And look and speak their brightest, His mercy will abound. The great sun will shine brighter, The earth appear more fair, Their hearts the holier, lighter, Their consciences more clear. They'll find the world not gloomy, But a paradise of love; Life's pathway strewn with roses, And blessings from above. —Mrs Adolph Goldwater. New Plymouth.
