Lord Lansdowne said the sugar production of the colonics regarded the Government's action with the profoundest dismay, If tlu* British markets re-opened to bounty-fed sugar, the keystone to the Convention would be withdrawn. Lord Fitzmaurice declared that the [ abolition of the convention system, and the tree introduction of sugar, would s provide more employment than any arti- • ficial arrangement.
