THE NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW
RKUOM) FUNU'JTO'N A'i'JALMERSTON. (By Telegraph.—From Oar Special Reporter.) Palinevston N., June 18. The title of "National Dairy Show" ! bestowed on the Palmerston function which opened to-day, is not ill-chosen or undeserved, for the comprehensive display.-; of the extensive sphere of inliueuee have laitgrown Die in-re commonplace title of winter k!i»w. As in past years, fee whole of the space available lias; been allotted, and more space could have been used had the association lm;l : at its disposal. Every inch of space within (he large halls is fullilling its distinct pur]'<.sc. and tile visitor, whether for the fist lime or with previous experience, will fmd much to interest and al tract. _ '' h.> ovevious arrangement of the main details and features of the show have been found lo work so satisfactorily that the same method has been adopted this year in regard to the machinery hall, 'but a great change is-noticed in No. IS hall. This year all the room therein is taken up by butter, choose, agricultural products, and school displays.
Piv-i'iiiiiient are butter and cheese exhibits, which are placed upon a central teW? 125 feet long, and which barely gives space for tlie large number of entries received. A picturesque effect is lent by the erection in the centre of the hall of a large arch modelled upon the huge arch "welcome" erected on Lambton Quay, Wellington, by the National Dairy Association on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to the colonies. The arch has an imposing 'effect, and cannot fail to attract the attention of even the most casual visitor to the show. On each side, extending to the walls of the building, are additional benches, all the full length of t he hali.bcuring a full complement of exhibits. til the rear of the hall the utility ehissc-. of poultry have been staged, the excellent entries received making a firstclass display of breeds of birds that no doubt the average, poultry man would Hud much uinio remunerative than the strict';,' show bird, which, as a layer of
eggs, is a "\v;isu'.r" of Mu- voivt kind. In the !iiiu:i:iiu'iy-luill itself Lv.iexaery i in m.diun i'o.nis the gi/'it u.,ir-i tien nf j iini i: iv .v 1 *ii- - ' .. .I-try , r r'.oi.i«a J .to.*. Questioned with regard to the butter exhibits, .Mr Cuddle Chief Dairy Commissioner, said the quality of the butter was well up to the standard of previous shows. A very good and most interesting class was the factory butter from bulk. This butter was taken by the show authorities from the ordinary consignment to grading stores for shipment and was consequently representative of the every-dav make of the different factories.
Taking it all through, said Mr. Cuddie. it, opened up very well indeed. Other classes were, of course, specially made and many of the exhibits were of a very high class. The butter this year was put to a further test as regards its keeping qualities, having been taken out of siore for defrosting purposes a week before the show. It came through the ordeal very weli indeed, standing the test well, though a few of the exhibits showed a lack of freshness; but this was not noticeab'e to any great extent. The body ami texture, as well as finish, were i fairly uniform.
CHEESE CLASSES. Cheese entries were higher than usual in these classes. TUc cheese was presented \s ilii a clean and neat appearance in the majority of eases, and the quality was very line indeed, that of the prizewinner?) particularly ho. Some defect was noticeable in a few of the exhibits, more particularly in regard to llavor, and no doubt some of it was brought about b.v the class of milk used for making. Willi regard to "make." pointing under this heading was fairly high, some of the exhibits almost r-'aching the maximum. What, 'Mr. Cuddie thought, spoke well for the uniform system adopted by cheese makers in both North an<|, South Islands. was the dead heat in the factory cheese class between Waikonati and Taratahi factories. This was regarded by Mr. Cuddie as A "MOST UNUSUAL INCIDENT,
and he pointed out that, not only were the total points scored by these two factories identical, but detail points were also similar, indicating that makers were wonting practically oil the same tines. There was a large, attendance ;-.t the show luring the afternoon, uverliowing i:. the evening. All ar; , by _b> oilWala are very The thmeeting' of the .A _ jio: v" Dairy Association is beiia ie: 1.
