"I. hu\e bought, subject to the approval of the Council, the second slaughterman's horse lor use at the abattoir. The price is £3 10s. It is mi aged horse, but it is hardly likely thai I will be able to get a young horse'for the small amount allowed by the Council. The horse has done the work and is used to the place; and so is not likely to stray away. It is also iuiiet and easy to catch. 1 have not yet bought the saddle and bridle as 1 have not found one suitable." So reported the abattoir manager last night to the Borough Council. The Council had a bit of I'uu at the expense of what Cr. Collis termed the "abattoir gee-gee." A councillor mentioned the desirability of keeping an eye 011 the boiling-down works near by, whilst another seemed to tliiuk there'was a danger of the poor old chap being slaughtered for export. The tliliieulty in procuring a suitable saddle and " bridle suggested to Cr. Browne that the beast must be awkwardly built. Rut a3 he was guaranteed I'jiiict, easy to catch, and apparently feud of the place, there seemed to be every likelihood of his changing hands at the price named.
Mr S. Clayton, manager for the Makahu Co-operative Dairy Co. has received a communication 'from Mr J, Johnston, produce grader at Moturoa, stating that tin> company's average grade for its season liKlti-7 output of butter is 93.77, and the Makahu factory gains top place on the list. When it is remembered that the factory is situated thirty miles to the eastward of Stratford, and the butter has to be carted to the Stratford railway station and then railed to Moturoa, the record is a most creditable one to all concerned, and suppliers and factory manager deserve heartiest congratulations. One important fact is worthy of mention and that is the great care which must have been exercised by Mr Fred Webb, who has carted the whole of the butter from the factory to the railway. Any earclc. sness on his part would have done a good deal towards the possible deteriraliou ol the butter.—Post.
The Borough Council last night discussed matters concerning the town omnibus end Irani traliic, complaints being made that (lie buses do not alwavs run to lime-table. This complaint referred to the fact that sometimes the 'buses were taken oil' (heir regular run and put into commission on other routes where there was special traliic and increased earning power. One instance was cited in which the failure of the .Moturoa service had put people to considerable expense in catching a steamer. Another complaint was that on Thursday afternoons the suburban service was very irregular and uncertain. The inspector said he was prepared if instructed, to take proceedings against those whose 'buses did not keep to the time-table, but lie thought it inadvisable to adhere too strictly to the regulations. Regarding the by-law that a list of fares should be posted in cabs, the inspector pointed out that in the New Plymouth cabs there was no convenient place to place a list, as the hood or covering was collapsible. The inspector was instructed to report on the whole matter.
