FRENCH WINE INDUSTRY
SOUTHERN (iKOWEKS AGAINST ADULTERATION. A MONSTER DEMONSTRATION. 600,000 PEOPLE PARTICIPATING.
' Received 10th, 9.40 p.m. The peasant population of 2'/ 2 millions in the South of France Solidly support the agitation for legislation against the adulteration of wine. Half a million Hocked to Mont Pellicr, where a monster peaceful demonstration took place yesterday.
One hundcrd special trains brought people from beyond a radius of 24 mileß. The organisers stipulated that those within that distance should walk or ride in carts.
The Bishop placed the cathedral and churches at the organisers' disposal to accommodate women and children unable to find lodgings. Marcellin Albert the leader of the movement, himself a peasant, enjoined the strictest sobriety on his followers lest the cause might be injured, and empliasised his advice of protesting need lessly in the presence of 10,000 troops. No intoxicants were sold. Received 10th, 11.38 p.m. Paris, June 10.
Peasants carrying miniature coffins, black flags, and banners bearing inscriptions, "Soldiers do not fire on your brothers who arc famishing," marched in procession through the streets of Mont Pellier! The meeting resolved that unless the Government yield to our demands today, payment of taxes be refused, mayors and members of muicipalities in districts would resign, while those refusing .to do so would be coerced.
