OAMARU HARBOR IMPROVEMENTS.
Pel Press Association. Oainnru, June 7. The berthing of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company's steamer Waiwera at the new wharf was made the occasion of a special function to-day. The steamer was brought in at about 11 a.m., and was swung in the basin and berthed at the wharf to take in 20,000 carcases of mutton. A social was held in the afternoon, at which Capt. McDougall, the marine superintendent of the company, and Capt. London, of the Waiwera, made reference to the great improvements that bad been made in the harbor, to its safety, ami to the new era that the improvements had ushered in. The members of the Harbor Board expressed their Intention of making further improvements, so that the port would lie abreast of the necessities of the times. Capt. London was presented with a gold pendent suitably inscribed as a memento of the event. The new wharf is 500 feet long, and there is 24 feet of water over a considerable part of the harbor, with more dredging to be carried out.
