Our sporting friends will be sorry 1o learn that "Moturoa," who has conducted this column with so much ability and success, has been stricken with 'in aliliction of the eyes. One eye has lost • its power, and the other is so weak that > it is impossible for him to use it with- ' out difficulty. Ho has been advised to ■ consult an eye specialist in Sydney, and 1 If-aves for that place a't an early date. • Our readers will, we are, sure, joinwiih
, us in hoping that the affliction will he ! but temporary, and that he will return ' to Taranaki with his visual powers tho-1 roughly restored. A. JuViau, the Auckland horseman, Is i considered one of the best all round riders in (he colony at the present time. An Auckland scribe makes the following reference to his riding at the, recent ;Takanuna meeting:—"The local cross- j country horseman, A. Julian, has ridden; ! some good races in his time, but it is! doubtful if he was ever seen to such ! advantage as on Haydn in the Stecp'c-, ! chase at Takapnna. When the field I raced along the back the last time it t looked a million to one against Haydn I. winning, but Julian kept his mount go-. ■ ing, and old Haydn, responding gamely : to the calls of his rider, gradually made , up his leeway, and at the last fence wis j within striking ilistince of the lea.ler (Mooltan), and, catching him a short j distance from the post snatched a ra.e' out of the fire by half a length. It was a givat perforin nice on the purl of t.iu j horse and rider, and they well deserved ; the applause that greeted them on (heir I return to scale. Haydn was turned out in great fettle by Frank Macmanemiu, I end the old gelding is probably as well j now as lie has been at any stage of his

During uii lony year* of service lie trained many of the greatest horses tu tke annals of English racing. Among iheni were lieud Or, Ormonde, Common,: Orme, Green Sleeve, Pero Gomez, Vagabond, Isonomy, Geheimness, St. Blair.e, | Paradox, Friars Balsam, Throstle, Sain- j foin, Shotover, La Fleehe, and Flying Fox. Besides his seven Derby winners/ four of Mr Porter's charges timshed. second in that great race. His training! also produced three winners of the triple, events, the Two Thousand Guineas, the | Epsom Derby, and the Doncuster St. Leger—these heroes being Ormonde, Common, and Flying Fox. Among the famous owners for whom Mr Porter has trained are King Edward, the Duke of Westminster, the Earl of Crewe, Lord Portsmouth, and Lord Alington. The greatest horse of his time, in Mr Porter's opinion, was Ormonde, who di,>d I in America in 1904. So proud was ho j of this beautiful animal tbat he made the remarkable proposition that Mio' Duke of Westminster should ride Ormonde in the Jubilee procession of 18S7. "He'll go as quiet as a sheep, four grace," said John. The Duke seems <.o have thought a little over this original proposition, for he compromised matters by giving a garden party in Mayfair ''to meet Ormonde." Mr Porter had the horse brought to London for t«« event. A3 he was being walked from Waterloo across Westminster Bridge a cabby inquired, "Halloa, guv'nor, what have you got there?" The reply cune quietly, "Ormonde," at which the amazed cabby could only gasp out "Gara! Who are you a-gettin' at?"
