A CHARGE OF THEFT.
Per Press Association. I Masterton, May 31. | At the Magistrate's Court to-day, H. P. Johnston, storciaan at the railway station, was charged with the theft of j two boxes of tobacco, valued at £lO 10s, the property of the New Zealand Guv- I eminent, and 0. R. Petersen, a dealer, ! was charged with receiving the tobacco ] from Johnson, knowing the same to be ■ stolen. Evidence went to show that the tobacco, which was consigned by a merchant firm to Eketahuua, was kept in the railway goods Bhed nearly a fortnight. Johnson then gave it to Petersen, who sold it to a local tobacconist for £7 17s Od. Both accused divided the proceeds. Two days later, Petersen bought the tobacco back, and returned it to the railway station. The police in the meantime received certain information, which led them to question Petersen, and he made a statement confessing his guilt. Petersen pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Johnson pleaded not guilty, and was committed for trial.
