There was some excitement on one of the colonial ferry steamers the other day. Leaving port a police ollicer bad charge of two men under bis care. One of these was practically given the ramie of the ship. saw the clothes and the empty birth, and became alarmed. ".Man overboard" was passed round, when the ship bad been searched from end to end. Ky-aucl-bye the delinquent strolled out of his new apartment, and the excitement failed away ill the oliicers' glad smile of satisfaction.
• A lew weeks ago a young man named .Sfhrodov.ski, of the Carripg'lon road, was ordered to contribute 15s per week towards the support of his sister, an inmate of the I'orirua Asylum, and to reduce the arrears by payments of £1 per week. Yesterday morning he applied to the Court for a variation of the order, •and ho was examined in an exhaustive examination as to his circumstances. It was shown that though he was ostensibly the owner of a couple of farms, lie bad heavy interest to pay. and his father and sisters all lived on the profits of the farming, which were not verv large. Under the'circumstances, Mr. liiddell, S.M., whilst declining to reduce the order for present maintenance, agreed that the facts disclosed a position rather different to ili.it at (he previous hearing. II" reduced the payments on account of arrears to 5s per weelc. Mr. C. H. Weston appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. Kerr for the respondent .authorities.
