BATTLE OF THE SAMPANS.
FUBIOUS FIGHT BETWEEN Singapore, March 5; A maritime battle between rival fleets . of Chinese sampans armed with batteries of bricks and broken bottles has taken place in the harbor. Ten men were injured and thirty-seven arrested. It is reported also that several men fell overboard and were drowned during the fight. Two sections of the sampan men who havs had a long standing quarrel determined to settle it outside the range of the police. They provided the sampans with ammunition and put well out into the harbor, where a furious fight began. The battle was conducted with much savagery, and the sampan men who fell overboard were battered on the head in the water. A small police launch which picked up several men were attacked, and had not one of the Marine Department's large launches steamed among the combatants the police launch and her. crew would probably have been sunk.
