The vessel was then 10 miles to the S.li. of the Cape, and making slow progress. When the Olenlui was some six miles off. .she signalled for a fiiolt. and the riucky at once went out; to her. She was found standing in under a lower lore-top sail, and lower main topsail and stay-sails. The Plucky immediately took her in tow. and the signal was made to til.' Heads for the services of a second tug, which was taken on shore as an indication that something was seriously wrong.
The lug Kopuiai steamed rapidly from I'ort Chalmers. ami went out to sea and assisted in towing the vessel, which had water in dvv hold, and was drawing 23ft. in towards the Beads, which was reached at (>.30 p.m. It was ascertaiend that the vessel lmd lift of water in her hold, and that she had fallen in with a violent westerly gale when of the Snares on Monday night. distressed vessel, got down the hold through the cabin., and 3ft of water speedily accumulated, damaging the cargo and stores.
During the night of the. gale, the mate | was washed overboard and drowned, and iho ship's sails were torn to ribbons. The mate's name was Jones, but his Christian name was not ascertained .He {shipped on the vessel at Adelaide. When the gale abated, Captain Scott, who was in command, set all hands to ihe minims, and when the (Jlenlui reached the TTcads,the water in the hoi hud by hard and continuous pumping, been reduced to 13 inches. The captain' and crew lost nearly all dheir clothes, and all the boats except one, which is much damaged, were washed away. The vessel will be brought to port today.
