Quite a cloud of g'oom was east over liie town on W.dnenlav morning when it became known that Mr P. <!.' White.l better known as "l'addv White,'' Ind
passed away, writes our Slralfonl correspondent under yesterday's da.te. lie came into town lasL evening for the purpo e of handing over his mail-carrying plant to Mr dolin Hewer, who has bought him out, and taken over the I mail contract to Whangainomona .ind outlying district. Mr White had fim the mail successfully for a great number of years, and the severity of the weather and tile hardships of the roads no doubt accelerated the cause of death, which the doctors pronounce as hen it disease, lie leaves a wife and tlir-c I sons. He was highly respected, anil in his capacity of mailman made a large
circle of friends, who will miss hi.- ' genial face on the road. The Stratford "Post" supplies the following particulars:—Mr White's son, who arrived here with him from Whangaino'inona, went twice to his father's bedroom this morning, but thought that Mr White was sleeping and did not wish .to disturb him. Later on Mr James Lawless, a son of the proprietor of the. hotel, having occasion to go to Mr White's room, discovered that he was dead. Deceased has been in Aery indill'ornt health for some time, but he remarked yesterday that, he felt much better. The late Air White was born at Blueskin, Dunedin. He left there when about twenty years of age, journeying to Christclvurcii ,:nd from thence fo Wellington, and later lie came on to Whangainomona, where he rc-ided until quite recently for the past twelve, years. Aibout live years ago Mr White bought out the coaching business of Mr .lohn Hewer, and with the assistance of his sons carried on the bu-iness until yesterday, when he completed the contract for the redisposnl of his business to Mr Hewer, who made a st.U't today. Mr White had been in ill-health for >ome time, ami he was feeling a little ■ better for the last week, but probably | the cold and the long drive from Whangainomona yesterday was too much for him. Mr White was well known some years hack as a prominent athlete. He was 40 years of age, and leaves a widw and three sons, lo whom, in common with many friends, we extend sympathy. The interment will take place on Friday.
