(From Our Own Correspondents). ' WAIT in. Thursday. 23rd May, was the day fixed for the local sports and the weaihcr for the first few days caused much misgiving as to what v.e would lie favored with.
However, though the day was threatening, it kept fair for the main function ami about 201) persons assembled on the grounds (Mr C. Mumby's farm), ami everyone was fully satisfied at the amusement provided. A strong committee had been formed, and deserve great praise for the manner in which the affair was carried out. The Inglewood Band, under Bandmaster Cottier, wan present and enlivened things greatly, the programme submitted being much appreciated. A large tent was erected in which tables had been placed for distribution of eatables, under the supervision of Mesdanies Sehriebcr. Miles and Bishop, the same being well patronised. .Messrs A. Bishop and Tobeck acted as judues. Mr C. Schricher starter. Messrs Miles, Tobeck and Hunter hamlicappcrs. The following were the results of the |different events:—Maiden rase: W. Hnrlihey 1, <J. Standing Chop: Dowman I, Dravitzski 2, Hurlihey 3; six others entered. 440 yds: A. Hopson 1, E. Hopson 2. J. Klenner 3; six others entered. Wrestling: W. Dowman L C. Muinby 2; ('. Sehrieber and .Y. Roguskc were the other competitors. 880 yds: W. Bennett 1.. O. Bennett 2, A. Hopson 3; three others started. Handicap Chop (local): A. Straneh 1, J. Hodges 2, A. Turchi 3; two other entries. .Double-handed Sawing(open): Dravitzski and mate 1, ' Strauch and mate 2; one other couple ; started. Hop, Step and Jump: Bracc--1 girdle 1, Paterson 2; five other entries. In the evening a large 'congregation congregated in the school, when a splendid programme was submitted anil was much appreciated. Mr A. Bishop aelod as chairman, while Miss Maekie and Miss Leech attended to the musical portion. Mr L. Maekie, in his comic songs (in character) was quite a treat to listen to and the audience seemed as if they could not have enough of the kind. The" following were the other items of the programme, but it would take up 100 much space to particularise each individual effort other than mention that all did their best to make the evening enjoyable: March, Messrs Bishop and Marlin (violins), A. Hunter (piano); song, Mr MacAllum; song. Miss G. Simpson; song, Miss Read; recitation. "The Man from Snowy River," Mr Bishop; song. Miss Cresswell; trio, Misses Leech and Maekie and Mr MacAllum; song, Miss Leech; comic reading, Mr Bishop; song, Mr Maekie; song, Miss fi. Simpson; song. Mr MacAllum; recitation, MiBishop. Several other items brought a most successful concert to a close, after which the room was cleared for dancing. which was well patronised and which was kept up till daylight. Mr Miles atced as M.C. and gave full satisfaction. Those who attended Waitui from a distance are well pleased with the outing, even-thing, thanks to a well organised working committee going off without a hitch.
MAKETAWA. Still stormy weather, hail and rain. However, the elements did not prevent the Durham Road school committee from going on with the annual school (rent which eventuated in the school on Friday. May 24th. The children mustered in full force, and their efforts to demolish the-good things obtained from the Moa Farmers' Union were capaMy attended to Mrs Mischewski and Mr Lawrence and the .Misses Taylor, Papps and Salisbury. The day being unfit for outdoor games indoor amusements were provided and fully enjoyed. In (he evening a large number attended and appreciated the programme submitted as follows: piano•Forte selection, Miss A. Sole; song, comic. Master F. Williams; song, Miss A. liridgeman; action song, school children; dialogue. Masters Hopkinson and Wiel ['Laurence; song, Miss G. Simpson: instrumental duct (piano and violin) .Mrs and Mr Wiliams: dinnhell exercise by junior school children; song, Miss M. liridgeman; recitation, W. Laurence; song (comic) Master F. Wililams; action song, "Six Little Nursemaids," school children; song. .). Simpson; recitation, Master P. Ilopkinson; .Mr Bridgeman kindly gave the use of his gramaphone, and at intervals between the different vocal items the audience were entertained by the machine. A comic reading and dumbell exercise by the senior pupils concluded a very nice entertainment after which dancing was indulged in. the affair terminating shortly after 2.30 a.m. On Tuesday last, May 21st, Miss M. Dodunski, of Durham Road, was married at Inglewood to Mr A. Scliunianski, of C'liristeliurch. After the ceremony a large number of relatives were entertained at the residence of the bride's parents. The youth of the district, in the evening revived the old but silly custom of the "tin-can brigade." and for a short while made a most hideous • noise, only desisting on a liberal distribution of good things being made. The happy couple left by the.mail train next morning en route for C'hristchurch.

The night was fine hut eold. and the attendance fairly large. Cards were introduced at 8 p.m. and played till midnight, when the asesmblage adjourned for super. The supper was excellent. The programme was then changed to dancing, which was kept up till daylight. The ladies were there in such numbers that they could not all get partners in the dances. Miss McKenzie, from I'ruti. supplied the music. The local contingent are backward at the piano (hough they can play euchre very well. There is a new store starting at the junction of the Tongnporiitu and Mangapapn rivers l.y a Mr Lichtv.aik, a settler there. The (hivcniment have stopped all roadmaking, so that money will lie scarce for a time. The telegraph poles are heing laid-on the Okau branch. The Okau post oilier will have a telephone before it will liiiVe a dray road. The terminus of the 12-feet track is about a quarter of a mile this side of it. There would be no great- expense entailed in making the track to the post office, but it has been left alone nearly two years. Heavy drafts of stock are passiii', through here. Over two hundred entile passed through a few days ago.

Jlr Trotter was appointed judge and Mr C. Cameron slip. On Wednesday n large ps'iy assembled as Mr Shoves' farm, Oeo, where; it was intended to have four matches, but owing to scarcity of lures only one match eventuated, and it proved indecisive. The match was between Mr dough's Psyche •>.nd Mr 11. lVperill's Kapai. Each dog won one nm and the third was undecided. The match will be decided in June. A run took place late in the day when a dog owned by Mr liickey heat on- owned bv'.Mr Cameron.
A quiet wedding was celebrated here on Wednesday last by the llev. Mr-Ar-thur, when Miss Christina Bead, daughter of Mr T. Bead, was united in matrimony to Mr A. R. B. Pierce, of 11aweru". The bride was given away by !c-r father, and was attended by i-ne bridesmaid, Miss Davis. of U'avcrlcy. whilst'.Mr J. C. Head acted as best man. 'lh.' young couple wen l the recipients of many useful presents. The u-mil monthly sitting of the Magistrate's Court w,is held here on Thursday. In the absence of the Magistrate, the Bench was occupied by .Messrs McUoynolds, tiny and -Moore, J.'sP. The only business was a few debt cases.
The weather has been very rough for the past few days, and, as a consequence, a very heavy sea is running. On Wednesday a very large number of trout were liberated in the Waiau river bv the Acclimatisation Society.
