A BAD DRAIN. A petition was presented by five residents of Bullet' street complaining of the filthy slr.te of the channel for about three chains eastward of Eliot street. The abattoir committee recommended that a horse, saddle and bridle be.procured for tiic alnitlor at a cost not exceeding £7; that the allowance of 3s Od per week made to the abattoir manager be discontinued, and that he lie allowed 5s per month to cover bus fares, etc., in coining to town to collect the accounts and in attending committee meetings; that consideration of the question of an increase in salary of the head slaughterman be deferred pending enquiries being made as to ruling rates of wages in other centres; that the second slaughterman be paid for the eleven (lays he was absent from work during illness; that the salary of the assistant slaughterman ■be "C2 per week; and that the appointI ment of \Y. Coombs as third slaughter- | man at per week be confirmed.
