The Government is protesting against the proposal made by Victoria, to subsidise a steam line to Singapore, on the ground that it is contrary to the Federal constitution, which debars on State granting a bonus without Federal sanction.
ARMY ECONOMY. Received Hay 251.1 i, 12.54 a.m. London, May 27. Tlie Standard states that the Government is considering the question of reducing the stalls of gunnery trainers at the Whale Island torpedo training school.
THE PORTSMOUTH MURDER'. London, May 2(1. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of wilful murder against Crumpe. When arrested the murderer handed the police a hurriedly scrawled note, wherein he menaced the victim in abusive terms.
A RANSOM PAID. Constantinople, May 26. A Greek band near Smyrna kidnappejl a Dutch baron named Kceinstra. A ransom of £6OOO was paid.
FOOLISH NOTORIETY SEEKER. Melbourne, May 27. A pianist named Healey sought to lower the world's record of 48 hours' continuous piano playing. Healey w~s forcibly removed by a doctor's orders after completing 40 hours. The performer was in a low eonditiou when ihe doctor intervened.
