Eliliu Root, referring to the recent attacks on Japanese restaurantcurs at San Francisco, requested the Governor of California to protect .Japanese, and see that the treaty between Japan and the United States was enforced.

Although Tokio advices state that the Japanese-do not attach cardinal importance to the attacks on the restaurant keepers, yet indignation has beenal'oued.

Viscount, Hayaslii ha- directed Viscount Aoki, Japanese Ambassador at Wellington, to demand protection for the Japanese.
