DEATH OF AN OLD SALT.
I'er Press Association. Dimedin, May 23. Captain William Nathaniel to-day passed- away at his residence, Edea '<treet. Few men were better known hero in maritime circles than the late Captain Chalmers, and few had ft lunger or more eventful record of the sea. Deceased was born at Cireav Yar leoitlh in !H2l, and enteicd l>r lioyat Navy in 183 ii, joining .11.M.5. Howe, and after a year's service! as a boy was transferred to iI.M.S. Britlania, the guard and training ship at Portsmouth, on whM .!• seiv«; for sixteen .noiitiis. He was the i shifted to II.M s lid ill l urgli and became part of Admiral Stopford's squadron, which bombarded and took lleirinoiit and St. Jean Dncrc in 18311. In these actions young Chambers took part. He was paid off in 1843, and passed into the merchant service, lie subsequently emigrated to Victoria, arriving there in the barque Surrey in 1852. l«'or years he carried on a lightening tun! waterman's business at Sandridge, nnd subsequently came on to Port Chalmers in ISIII, and was engaged extensively in coastal trade. In yachting circles Captain Chambers was also well known. Deceased leaves a widow and four daughters.
