TARANAKI EDUCATION BOARD.

Tin l Education Board continued its meeting on Wednesday. finance committee. The Finance Committee recommended: Tli.il the Jioard grant £ for ,C subsidy to Tongaporutu school for shelter shed; that the Richmond road request for newdesks and fur enlargement of the school lie referred to the Chief Inspector, and the matter of the need for repairs to the residence to the architect, for their reports; that the InglcwoiKl committee's request for a grant, for fencing a piece !i'f ground for agricultural classes, he referred to Messrs Morton and Trimble" to report upon; that the architect remedy the smoking chimney at Lcpperton; that the Inglewood application for repairs to the school and residence he j

that the residence will he painted in the ensuing spring, and that a new chair lie supplied for the school; that the letter from the Commissioners in regard to bushfalliug and fencing at the "'Matau school be referred to the chairman to deal with; that the following amounts be allocated for expenditure out of the niaintenace grant for the coming year—architect £l5O, advertising .CSO, apparatus £l5O, furniture £2OO, painting £3OO, shelter sheds £llO, and that Unbalance of the maintenance grant be used to meet the ordinary demands for expediture on school buildings and properties.

The report was adopted. The Financial Committee will lie asfred to re-arrange the grants made to school committees for shelter sheds, and report at next meeting.

WHANC-AMOMOXA. Messrs Morton and Trimble reported on the question of removing the school at Upper Wliaugamomona, petitions for and against having been presented. They had inspected the state of the roads, and made full enquires. They were of opinion that children could not in winter get to a school placed at the junction of the Whitianga and Kohuratahi roads, it eventually it might be found feasible to place a school there. They could not recommend any alteration iii the position of the schools at present, though should the number of children between Kohuratahi road and the Tahora Saddle increase, or should it be found advisable to place a school at the junction of the Whitianga and Kohuratahi roads, it would probably be necessary to remove the Upper Whanganiomona school to a point somewhere near the Kohuratahi hall.

The report was adopted. INSPECTOR'S REPORT, The Inspector recommended that the matter of adding to the Rahotu school should be held iu abeyance for a few months to ascertain if the increased attendance was likely to bo maintained. As the average attendance at the Lower Mangorei school was considerably under what the floor space allowed for, he had no recommendation to make. Ho recommended that the frosting of the windows in the headmaster's room at Okato and that blinds be provided for two windows on the north-east side of the building. Most of the windows on the north-west side of the building were fixtures, and as these interfered to a great extent with the ventilation, he. recommended that they be made to open. —Adopted.

NEW DISTRICT. On the application of ten householders the Board decided to take the necessary steps to declare the Opua road district a separate school district. A NEW DEPARTURE.

Mr Geo. Rose, of Wellington, forwarded two dozen stereographs of New Zealand, and one stereoscope, in order to bring under the notice of the Board theit excellence in the teaching of elementary science, the Alpine series especially be.-

ing invaluable iu the study and demonstration of physical geography and geology. He offered these at 7s (id a. dozen stereographs, and 4s each for the stereoscopes. The Board decided to purchase three sets, one for each ward, to be passed round from school to school.

APPOINTMENTS. The Teachers' Selection Committee recommended that names of applicants be forwarded to committees interested as follows:—Stratford District High School, Assistant mistress (three applications). Mis- Black, 8.A., 133, Central. Bird road, sole teacher, Mr W. A. Brown, 1)1. Denbigh mad; T. 1). (.). MeKenzie. 1), Bird read; Lady l.c Fleming. 1)2. South Canterbury. Eltham mad, side teacher, Miss if. Bourke, Westport. Urcnui, assistant mistress, Miss M. E. Bernslen. part D, Okalo; Okato, assistant mistress, Miss (!. C. A. McMillan, Kaeaca.—The recommendations were adopted.

Resignations were accepted: Miss Urquhart, Stratford; Miss F. Rigby, sole teacher, Eltham road; Miss M. MeNichol, mistress, Ononui; Miss W. 51. Stephen, Bird road (appointed-to Egmont road); Mr H. F. Pcnlington, Lepperton. Mr Fatill reported on the proposal to erect a school at Okau. and the report was to the effect (hat the present arrangements be continued. lie further recommended making application to the Department for a grant for a new resilience at Tongaporutu.

Fresh meetings of householders will be held where committees were rot electappointments recommended to fill vacancies be confirmed.

The committee at l'ungarehu will be asked to have out-ollicc- repaired, charging cost of material to the Board.
