PROVINCIAL NEWS.
♦ MAKETAWA. The weather lately has (been some* thing cruel, the wind coming from the South with a very cold drizzling rain. At times the wind blew almost a hurricane, making all outdoor work exceedingly unpleasant. Tii supply of milk to the factory has gone down with a rush, and conseqently suppliers are only attending two or three times a week.
On Tuesday, -May 14th, ilr Ben. Douibroski, of .Norfolk road was unit.d in niatrimonal bonds to Miss P. Neutrosky of Vork road. The ceremony was performed at Stratford, ami a large number of friends from all parts of Lie district attended the wedding feili, vities, which took place at the residence of t!g'e bride's parents. Tile happy couple have the best wishes of all for their i-ccess in the future. ilr Joe. Dodunski, who suffered the loss of his residence by fir." a few weeks back, having decided not to build on the old site, lias la-en busily engaged clearing a new place, and 1 notice that the first instalment of limber is already in the I'liiuiid.
Mr Jas. Bridgcman. a few weeks ago was thrown from his milk cart and received Midi a severe slinking that necessitated a stay in New Plymouth Hospital for a week or so. He returner! home on Monday last eonsklei'ably i,m proved in health. It is held in many quarters that the land in the vicinity of Inglewood is unsuitable for the purpose of fattenng <toek for beef. Perhaps it is that the right kind of animal lms not in the past l.eed bred, for a steer sold by .Mr Win. Lawrence, of Durham road, to Mr W. Lilc, an iuglewood butcher certainly proves that the idea has exploded. Messrs Lawrence ami Bridgcman, at considerable expense, have purchased pure-bred cattle, both heifers and bull, the latter being the progeny oi the wonderful •Duke of Uothes'ay,' l owned by Mr Chamberlain of Canterbury, while the former were obtained from some of the best breeders in the Wellington and llawkc's Bay districts. As a tribute to their efforts to obtain a right sort of beast the steer mentioned above must 1)0 taken as a sample of wdiat can be done. The beast, which was just on :S-years old, topped the beam at a trille over 'JOOlbs, and the butcher and those who saw the carcase dressed, state that it excelled those from the much-vaunted Plains. It might be mentioned that the animal had no special feeding other than ordinary grazing, and it speaks much for this part of the district and also the class of beast being rearer by the gentleman mentioned. Since obtaining the pure-bred cattle the owners have dis" posed of several bull calves to persons in different parts of the district, and no doubt in time the effect on the class >f cattle in the district, for the better will be noticeable.
A large quantity of firewood is being sent away every week from the Dm" ham road station to New Pvmouth. 'Out-of-works'' in town can rely on miking a decent wage if they eared to tackle the splitting business "and would migrate into the country.
The Durham road school picnic even'uates on Friday next, and, given a fine day, should be well-attended. A concert and dance will be held in the school in the evening.
