Xiciiol, a prominent i-.eii, died suddenly on Saturday uU. -i'lioon. Niehol lived ill Oce.iii lieacil all I came up to town daily for business. Un Saturday morning he came up as usual and transacted business throughout the day, and lefi for Ocean Beach by the 5.10 train, apparently in good lieaith. Oil alighting at Ocean Beach he appeared to be overcome by faintness, and was carried into the cooking house attached to the Freezing Works, where he expired in a few minutes. Deceased wis a member of the linn of Xiciiol Bros., of Bluff and Invercargill, shipping and general merchants, and at one time ship owners. Among their vessels was the Chance, immortalised by Bui lon in "the cruise of the Cachalot.*"' Mr Xiciiol had been closely associated with the develop ment of the Bluff and Invercargill and . was an active public man. He was a life-long member of the Chamber of ] Commerce, and at one time Chairman . of Directors of the Southland Frozen , Meat Co. His unexpected death causal ] a severe shock to his many business aud * private friends, and great sympathy ?s i felt for the widow aud grown-up family. i
Wellington, May 11. The jury gave a verdict tliat Mrsj Bell's death was caused by an overturned traniear; that the car, track, and equipment were in good order; that tiie runaway was accidental, but that there was not sufficient evidence to warrant a decision as to the cause, of same. Riders were added affirming the necessity of further inquiry by experts as to whether bogie cars fitted' with maximum tra(Stion brakes should be used on such sleep inclines as Brooklyn; that no oue but- first-class motormen should lie allowed to drive on such steep grades that the attention of the City Council he called to the effect of the reversing lever of the controller being placed in the wrong position through the runaway causing magnetic brake to become inoperative; that attention be called t.o tile system of signalling, so as to eliminate over-running sections; that proper jacks be carried with each ear.
