VAST PROPERTY CLAIM.
The rights of the Crown—that is, the nation—>to what is known as the Page Estate will probably be raised at- an early date in the House of ffannions. The Page Estate is a vast tract of London stretching away in the form of a triangle from Hyde Park, and covering some of the most valuable land in London. Its yearly income is estimated in millions, and all this rich gold mine in site values is declared to he the property of ithe nation.
Those who are interested in the matter allege that in the year about 1870 there was an escheat of the Crown of the real estate, and that owing to Ihe numerous and powerful interests involved the matter had been allowed to rest. The heirs to the estate are believed to be extinct, but legal opinion seems to regard the chances of the Crown seeming the estate as somewhat remote. The only result of .-ifling the title would he, it is said, to clear the way for numerous individuals to lodge claims which they will not take the personal responsibility of testing.
Meanwhile the trustees ai'o in supreme control anil nobody is likely to prove daring enough to dispute their possession, except tlie, case was taken up by the Crown. 80 far, however, successive Treasury officials have not been disposed to interfere.
