MR DEAKLN'S ATTITUDE CRITICISED. Sydney, Mav S. The Daily Telegraph says that Mr Deakin, in declining tu allow a New Zealand representative (Mr F. Filehett) to act for Australia as a member of the New Hebrides Commission, seems to give expression to a desire to do as much as possible to discredit the British Liberal Government. ''Possibly,'' the piper adds, "iiis refusal was also partly dictated by resentment against Mr Asquith's frustration of his advocacy for preference/' After referring to the Commonwealth's attitude on the New Hebrides question, the Telegraph stite,:—" When, therefore, Mr Deakin professes a concern in the New Hebrides, he docs so largely in pretence, a fact which i- the more' noticeable by comparison with Sir Joseph Ward's accep.auce of thr. conditions: because Xew Zealand has always been ready to practise what die preaches to the extent of encouraging island settlement and trade."
