Earl Cawdor moved that the Bill bo •oferred to a select committee.
The Earl of Ciewe opposed the Bill and the amendment, on the ground thai the Ciovernmeiit was introducing a measure shortly which would deal les* with reform of the Lords than the relation of the 'two Houses. He foreshadowed proposals limiting the lloua» of Lords' power. AMENDMENT CARRIED. Received Dtli, 12.52 a.m. London, Mav-8. Received Dili, 12.52 a.m. t ~ ~ London, May 8. In the House of Commons, Mr. Redmond received i[ r . Bin-ell's , m , wiUl cpiahhed approval. He disapproved of nominated members, but accepted them m the hope of allaying the fears of tho minority. He withheld his final judgment of the Bill but would not repel any device for lessening his countrymen's suffering. The Irish Unionists vehemently denounced the measure, predicting religious strife, and the minority wovld be at the mercy of a permanent Catholic majority. Received 9th, 1.7 a.m. London, May 8. Mr. Redmond's speech referred to Mr. Birrell's Administrative Council of Dublin Bill, which, after the closure had been applied, was read a first time by 410 voles to 121.
Mr. Birrell remarked that the Bill did not contain 11 touch, truce, hint or suggestion of iiny new legislative power or authority, adding that Purliumeiit would remain majestically unaffected by Us provisions.
