Twelve hundred, including all high British-Egyptian oliieials, assembled at the Opera House to hid farewell, and thank Karl Cromer for his services. Karl Cromer, in an energetic speech, reviewed tlu< past, and eulogised Tcwitik, Xnbai, liiaz, I'ehmz Pashas, and other reformers, Sir Wm. Carstim, Jlajor-deneral Sir Reginald Wingate, ami other colleagues. lie declareil that his two objects had been tlu restoration of a good understanding with I'rance. and Ili > introduction of a liberal spirit into the system of Covevnment, which was necessarily bureaucratic. lie warned the Egyptian* against the Nationalists, ami expressed a hope that the Khedive would suppress scandais connected with the Administration of Wakus or religious trusts, reform Mahomniedaii tribunals, ignore flatterers and evil counsellors, and encourage honest reformers, lie would thus earn the gratitude of every class. He emphasised (lie fact that the British occupation of Egypt. would continue for an indefinite period, and Britain, during the continuation of her occupation, would be responsible for the main principles of the AdJ ministration. None was more capable for the safeguarding of that continuance ! than Sir Kldon Gorst, his successor.

The Times says that Earl Cromer's Cairo speech produced as profound an impression upon the public as his resignation, and will go far to restore confidence.
