NATIVE LANDS FOR SETTLEMENT.

Auckland, May 2. For some time negotiations liave been in progress for the acquisition by the Government of the Otnkanini block of native laud at Heleusville, held by the Xgatiwhatua tribe, and it now appears practically certain that the (ioyernnieiit will acquire the iuea. The block contains acres, and lies north-west pf ilelensville. It is valued at .41 per acre, with the exception of the eastern portion facing Ilelensville channel, and containing 201)0 acres all Hat iand and three-parts swamp, which is valued at tl2 per acre. If these ligurcs are realised, the amount to be paid will not bo far below C-10,000 to be handed over to the natives. Jlr. 1). Paul, as director on behalf of the natives, says tlio money will be c'.ponded on the better utilisation of lands held by the same natives elsewhere.
