A practice game will be held on Saturday.
| The Kifle Club, which was starlod about twelve mouths ago, held their Urol match on Saturday. There was a fair attendance for the opening, and the following were the scores:—
| OPUNARE NOTES. ! On Wednesday evening last a valedictory social was tendered Mr. aud Mrs. A. O'Brien, who are leaving here after a residence of over sixteen years. The function was held in the Town Hall, which was well filled, over 100 being present. Dancing was indulged in, excellent music being provided by .Messrs. Humphries, McNeil, and Mark'ham. Mr. W. Dudley acted as M.C. During the levelling Messrs. Coombridge and Walters | rendered a duet. "Long Live the King," | and Mr. MeDavitt a solo, "In Happy J Moment." The chairman of the Town ! Board, Mr. W. C. Dudley, in the course a few remarks, referred to the manner in which the guests had worked for anything connected with the town. He ;hen presented Mrs. O'Brien with an illuminated address and with a silver cake dish, suitably inscribed, and a purse of sow-reigns. Mr. O'Brien suitably thanked those present.
The usual monthly sitting of the S.M. Court was held on Thursday before Mr. \\. («. Riddell, S.M. There was not much business. In a rate ease, (J. W. Rogers (County Clerk) v. Koi Xgamari (.Mr. McDavitt), the magistrate non-suited the plaintiff on the grounds that notiee should have been given defendant to produce his notice in order to show that a proper demand had liceu made, and also the magistrate held that an officer of a corporation must file in tin? court a written authority, showing he has power to issue.
A football match was played 011 Saturday between Opunake and the new Ka ponga seniors. Neither team had its full strength, but nevertheless a fast and in tercsting game resulted. The Opunake forwards, who are of the fast, dashing older, proved too good for their opponents, and the game resulted Opunake 8 (two tries, one converted), Iva ponga :i (penalty goal). Mr. .J. C'. Dca made an eilicient referee.
LErratTOjr. The first cold snap of the season is with us. The chill southerly is hustling the yellow-tinted 'leaves, and the streams are flowing strong. The four droughtiest months of the year luive seen the clouds pour down 35 inches of liipiid blessing; so. with winter ahead of us, things are distinctly hopeful. On Saturday night a well attended meeting of the Draughts Club was held in tin l hall. .Mr. F. \V. Atkinson was reelected president. Mr. Pennington vicepresident, and Mr. E. IlcllierV'crolary and treasurer. It was decided to meet every Saturday evening, and. as the membership promises to be large, a niosl successful season is looked for. Several I'plitud Road enthusiasts .were present, and have thrown in their lot with the local c lib, which looks forward with confidence to future contests. At the annual library meeting a salisfactory balance sheet was presented. The number of subscribers, twentv-two, is, however, not what it should lie. There are some 5(11) volumes oil the shelves, ranging from Carlyle to Nat (iould. from Plutarch to Corelli, but your farmer too frc<|ueiitly has 110 time for anything but his paper, and not much for that. When he does sit down to his literary feats he follows the universal rule—fiction for every course, fiction for every meal.
As the township of Lepperton is included in the iu'\v Taranaki electorate, some interest is taken locally in the forthcoming election. Many were under tile impression that the new arrangement of boundaries would come into force forthwith, and it was rumoured that M vera! local candidates were girding for the hay. The prolonged milk yield, however, put a stop lo that nons< c.^e.
KAUOTU. The competition for tlie shdotjngj kit was advanced another stage at the liahotu range on Saturday, when match was tired, the conditions being seven shots at 500 yds and fiOOyds. Mr A. Phillips and \Y. Green tied with 57 point?*, but on the count back the former won, having scored more points at tlu» longer range. Twul Mr Greeu won, lie kit would have been his, as he won it last time, the conditions (being twice in succession or three time.s at intervals. During the winter months we have only hail, cattle sales once a month. This year, however, Mr Newton King has decided to continue his sales fortnightly, a«■ in the summer months. On Saturday night Mr Raynor gave nn entertainment in the local InilJ. There was a good audience, who appeared to enjoy the contortion acts. During the evening Mr Baker's gramophone supplied several selections. At the conclusion a dance was held, music being .supplied by Misses TTonan and Fowler, and Mr Wilcox, Mr ,!, Willeox made an efficient M.C.
