THE LONDON PiiODl'CK MARKET. COMMISSIONER'S RECORT. Per Press Association. Wellington, April 29. Jhe .Secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce has received a repon jroni the Produce Commissioner in London: "Unfortunately since my last report concerning the market for butter, there has not been any improvement to' record. The only satisfaction that can be obtained is that there has been, dut ■
, ' n g the past week, a somewhat steadier tone, and values have not receded. Further, very heavy supplies of colonial butter, which this year show, both landed and now on the water, a great increase I over those of last year at this time, has undoubtedly been the chief cause of tue decline in values. I have made an extended inquiry as_ to the cause of the depreciation in price, and can ascertain no other reason. Trade throughout the country is good, the retail demand is satisfactory, ami every other condition is such as to linn the market under usual conditions. There are so far no stocks being placed in cold store; the price lias not come sulliciently low to warrant speculation in that manner in face of the prospects of large supplies. It is reported ou the market here that .Siberia will show a large increase in her shipments of butter this season, and that these will commence to arrive in this country earlier than usual. This outlook naturally will cheek speculation ill colonial butter for cold storing. The
cheese market has been steadily good, although during the past day or two it has been scarcely so strong, and prices have been accepted for New Zealand cheese Gd per cwt. lower than last quoted. There does not, however, seem to be anv likelihood of values falling very much. There is good demand throughout the country. Stocks arc in reasonable compass, and holders are firm in their ideas. It. is not probable, therefore, that anv great change will take place before ail New Zealand shipments are disposed of. ■
