Air. .Millar, Minister in eharge of the Inspection of Machinery Department today, with reference to the award under which the union is working. Mr. Baitfield pointed out that owing to the large number of exemptions under other awards, very few members of the union worked under their own award. The result wan that the union was of little use to its members. Jle suggested that an amendment should be made in tfie law, whereby on the expiry of existing awards, all engine drivers, no matter where working, should come under the operation of their own award.
1 he Minister pointed out I hat, in the . case of steamship and mining engineer J drivers, a special certificate was required, ami an exemption was therefore necessary. Willi regard to oilier cases, he suggested that the union should make application to the Court when awards of diileveiit trades came up tor renewal, f" l ' exclusion of engine drivers from separate awards, so that thev might come under their own.
Mr. lionlield said that such appKce.(ion had !iivii reluscd at \V:i ilii a fortnight ago. lmt the Minister pointed out that this was probably due to the fact Ihe.t a separate certilieate was required under the Mining Act. The deputation stated that they would adopt the suggestion.
