BAHOTU. Mr. 11. A. Mills, clerk to tbe Parihaka Kiiad Hoard, has jrone to Wellington on business connected with the board. During his absence Mr .1. Ilotlierv, chairman,is'in charge of the ollice. Tin: Uahotu school picnic was held in the sehonl ground yesterday, and, clc|spile threatening weather, there was a good attendance of adults and children. ; After a slight shower, about one p.m., tic rain cleaved, and races, etc., were imbdg.-d in, most of the children being made happy by winning prizes, itefresh'meiiis and games me.de up n day's enjoyment for the youngsters. The picnic .committee, viz.,' Jlr. Campbell, Miss 'Dempsey, Messrs. liayner, Corkill, and jlliigiisou all worked hard, and they were 'n.vd-ted with the races by Messrs. Given, Hall, aud Hopkins, whilst Mesliaiu.'.s Wright. Morrow, Mellanighan, K'll.i, and llughson attended to the wants of the inner man and child. items were exceedingly well renderei and reflect great credit on the youn performers as well as on the teacher: Miss Dompsey and Jlr. Campbell, wli bad trained them so well. Durin the evening- Jfr. llughson, who preside: disposed of a cpianlitv of soft drinl kindly given by Jlr. Hood aud left ov< from'the picnic. Votes of thanks wei accorded the concert eommiltee, Mr Campbell, Jliss Dempsey, .Messrs. Cam), Campbell and Gihnore. Before dispersii the children were entertained at suppe and Mr. llughson sent them all lion thoroughly happy by proclaiming holiday on the Thursday.
The annual meeting of Hie hall committee lakes place shortly, and it is expeeled the matter will then be brought forward. At the conclusion of the school concert Miss Ilonati held her second assembly in the hall. There was a good attendance, and an enjoyable time was spent. Excellent music was provided by .Miss Honan.extras being played bv Miss Fowler. Mr. .1. M'illcox made a capable M.C.
]t was intended to sell the children's garden plots at the school picnic to-day, but, as the hour was late, it was decided to have thorn auctioned at Mr. Xewtc.u King's next sale. The school funds should benefit considerably as the result of the picnic and concert. The weather for the past few days has been very unsettled, lightning and thunder being very prevalent. Last night there was a very heavy shower of rain and hail, accompanied by an electrical display of thunder and lightning.
