Stanton gave him some powde » to take, but he died from the complaint on Sunday last. Medical evidence was given that death was due to diphtheria, and tliat the- condition oi the stomach indicated that some irritant had been taken. The life of deceased might possibly Ua Te been saved by proper skilled treatment, an. plied three or four days before death A. A. llickerton, Colonel Analyst for Canterbury, stated that the powden given to the deceased by Stanton contamed nothing but sugar. He found however, that the stomach was affected with oxalyic acid, which could not have got into the stomach by natural meanj, and which was not used in medicine. One of the medical witnesses stated that the presence of oxalylie acid Was in no way to be accounted for by tho diphtheritic condition.
Hit' jury, after a short retirement, returned the following verdict:—"That deceased's death was due to diphtheria accelerated, by the treatment adopted by -Mr. Stanton." '
