MRS THAW'S FEAR OF WHITE
THRILLING ACCOUNT OF HER LIFE IN TWO CITIES. SYMPATHETIC WOMEN WEEP IN COURT. NEW YORK, Feb. 21. No more terrible 01 deal has ever been undergone by man or woman in a New York court than that to which Mrs Harry Thaw was submitted to-day it the hands of the District Attorney. Mr Jerome continued his eross-exam-inntion, and his proving into her past was absolutely pitiless. In spite of its character, however, it did not convey an impression of brutality. Mr Jerome bore himself like a man performing tne most unpleasant duty of his life, and on one occasion, when Mr Delmas accused him of sneering at the pitiful little figure in the witness chair, he repudiated the suggestion with a display oT real feeling. There was a dramatic moment when Mr Jerome pressed home his questions about White's renewal of his relations with Mrs Thaw after her betrayal. She burst into a storm of weeping, in which she was joined by a woman reporter i" court. Mr Delmas was visibly affected, as were also several of the jurymen. MR. JEROME AFFECTED. Very gently Mr Jerome offered to forego the cross-examination for a time, but Mr Delmas saw his advantage, and Insisted that he should proceed. When the court adjourned for the luncheon interval Mrs Thaw wits very [ pale. She tottered from the stand, and , was helped into a waiting room, where she fainted. She was quickly revived ' by her friend. Miss May Mackenzie, and ' when she resumed the stand after 11111- . cheon she was pale, but self-possessed.
It was evident that she was trying bard to tell the truth as she saw it. Site repeatedly complained that Mr Jerome's questions were beyond her comprehension, and he was compelled to restate them in a simpler language. The severe cross-examination, although expos ing a terrible past, did not shake her direct testimony in the slightest, degree, but strengthened it greatly.
