TRADE WITH VANCOUVER.
SI'CCESSOR TO 'FRISCO LIXE. PROBABLE CAXADIAX-ACSTKALIA SERVICE. CALLING AT AUCKLAND. Received 23rd, 10.15 p.m. Sydney, April 23. In connection with the recent cab' stating that the CainuUau-Paciiic ltai way had decided to piace tuo of it Orient service vessel:! on the Auslrali line, Mr. Gibbons, a representative Cai adian pressman, who arrived by til Aorangi, confirms the information, lit ferring to the development of Canadian Australian trade. Mr. Gibbons say
' much interest was evinced throiighoii I Western Canada in the present steam ship situation, the withdrawal of iiu Oceanic Company's licet, being lookei upon as wealing an opportunity, wiiici it would lie suicidal for British linos tc neglect, by a combination of mail subsidies and general trallie hitherto divided between rival lines. There should be no diliieulty in profitably maintaining a direct Canadian-Australian line, calling at Auckland, by utilising most of the modern steamships afloa;. With such ye - sels trallie would be stimulated, and the time required for the interchange of British mails appreciably reduced. The general expectation throughout .British Columbia had been that the Cun.ulianPaeilic would, with the lapsing of the present mail subsidy, seek the entire trade on its own account. Whether this course of action would lie pursued, or the service continue in the hands of an Australian company operating in concert with the Canadian-Pacilie, Mr. Gibbons thinks immaterial to the maiu issue, which is that the time is ripe for the substitution of larger, faster, and more modern vessels, with which trade would speedily and considerably expand.
