MOA ROAD BOARD.

The Moa Road 3Ward met on Saturday. Present: Messrs. 11. Trimble (chairman), A. Corkill, T. Clianmov, Kenwood, lloby, Laurence, Morgan, Marsh, and Turner. BEDFORD ROAD. Mr. 11. Broadmore, contractor for .gravelling the Bedford road, waited on the hoard, claiming extra payment for metal laid in excess of specification. The specified depth of the new stone was eight inches, and it was found to be considerably more. The chairman informed Mr. "Broadmore that the complaint and the claim 'must be put ill writing before the board . could consider it. The engineer, in answer to questions, said* the contract was not up to specifications in other respects, but he could not allow the extra good work to balance the bad. Consideration was deferred. The engineer reported that on the suspension bridge over the Ngato-ro stream on the Bedford road, wire netting Avould be substituted for hand-rails for the greater safety of the school children. The*material had been ordered, and a start with the work of erection would be made as soon as possible. NORFOLK ROAD. The chairman reported that during one of the recent "freshes" a culvert on the Norfolk road had broken through. Just there the creek ran almost parallel with the road, except that it crossed the road twice in a few chains. Some years ago a ditch had been dug to enable this creek to be turned into another, but a settler objected to the turning of the water, lie (Mr. Trimble) had now instructed the foreman to cut a 40-foot tunnel in order to put the two streams into the one channel. This would make a considerable saving, as the tunnelling would cost only n few pounds, whilst pipe culverts would cost £lo for pipes alone.— Action approved. KNGIKEEU'B REPORT. Messrs. Orbell and Mackay reported on the works under their supervision. The Mangaone mad metalling had now been completed, the stone carted out and Mucked. Arrangements could now be made to have these broken. The actual metalling of the liedl'ord road had been completed, but had not heeu linished oil' to the engineer's satisfaction. Roth metalling contracts on the Surrey road had been completed in n satisfactory man ucr. Owing to a mistake in figures the total amount of money expended would be about £111)7, instead of £1127, the total available by loan aud Government subsidy. The Davis road forming and metalling had been delayed by the bad weather, but the contractor was nowworking Jhe Wig cutting. The contractor had showed the engineers nn old gravel pit near the Waiongona bridge and offered to metal an extra half chain if lie were allowed to use gravel instead of broken boulder stone. They recommended the acceptance of the offer. The report was adopted. GENERAL. .Foreman AVard reported that the Kai mala road south needed some metalling and thirty yards of stone for repairs were needed on Ratapiko road. The junction of the Kohite and Tariki roads needed attention.—Adopted. The Treasury advised that the Order*-in-Comicil levying special rates lor the loe loe and -Johns road?-, had been gazetted; also that giants amounting to £ll7 os (Davis road £2O os, Surrey road and 'lariki road £SO, .Surrey load 1127. Toe I'oc £2O). hud been p;iid into the board's account: and that USD wa.; available for expenditure on the Mangaone road; and that the £250 loan was available for the Bedford road north and Dudley road west. Mrs. Bishop asked the board to gravel a few chain* on the worst places on the Everett road before winter, otherwise the road would soon be impassable.—The loreman will report on the state of the road and the estimated cost of the gavelling. •).
