The Minister was interviewed by the Tnuranga, Chamber of Commerce, who suggested that the Government should! subsidise a steam line to inaugurate trade to southern ports. The district produced excellent fruit, for which tier? was a good demand in Wellington; yet owing to the difficulty in getting goods ■ sent to the South, it was said to be 1 cheaper to get lemons from Naples thin from Tnuranga. Tho Union S.B. Ooy., though it hud once done so, had declined ; to call at Tnuranga, and the Northern I Coy. did not seem to favor taking Up the * matter, the expense being too great to 1 make it profitable. If tho Government 1 subsidised a monthly steamer to the South, sny, at the rase of £SOO for 'the first twelve months, it, would stimulate the production of ca*!y fruit and vegetables, and make it possible to soon run an independent line. It was useless sending fruit to Auckland, as it did not realise the cost of packing and freight. The Minister replied that he would look into the matter and see the Ministev for Marine personalty to explain the posttion to him.
