EFFORTS TO SECURE LABOR. London, April 17. Mr. W. M. Hughes is at present in , iVienna trying to engage several hun- ' dred laborers for the Queensland sugar . plantations. He is offering free passages to Queensland. Overtures to en- . gage men in Italy failed. The Emigrants' Office in comuvti. with the Colonial Office warns British emigrants to remember the climatic conditions of the sugar farms of North Queensland, and to consider that it is very questionable if they would be able ' to work under tropical conditions. Rc- : cruiting for ordinary farm laborers is proceeding satisfactory, but there have been many defections since the conditions were fully explained. MR. HUGHES' MISSION. Received 19th, 12.14 a.m. Sydney, April 18. The Mr. Hughes mentioned in a cable message as engaging labor in Vienna is an employee of the Colonial Sugar Company, not Mr. W. M. Hughes. The company despatched him to Europe to engage labor for Queensland sugar growers. He has authority to secure 1050.
