TOUT TOriCS. By "Moturoa." The New Zealand Cup winner, Star Rose, is back again in Waitara. An operation was performed on the son of Daystar recently, which will necessitate his appearing as a gelding when he next [ sports silk. In the meantime, however, Star Rose will he treated to a leuglhv spell. Starina, who was recently brought in after having heen fired, has developed an abscess on the back which lias neec» sitated au operation, and it is therefore unlikely that the horse will race again for some considerable time. Mr. \V. Elliot, of Wailara. is hacking about a rather line-looking half-brother to Maniapoto, by Westmere. The youngster is only two years old, but i* well developed. , A tine big colt by Sylvia Park out of a mare by Howitzer—Sartoria, arrived , from Auckland on Friday morning for the same owner. The colt, which is ris- . ing three years old, was bred in the Wai- . kato by Mr. James Hooker. For his age he is well developed, and should furnish into a line big horse. .Mr. E. Russell is pulling Cyrene into work again. The gelding appears to have ipiile recovered from the kick he received at Stratford. Those who attended ihe Mauaia Racing Club's meeting last Wednesday had a most enjoyable day's outing. If the chd) arrange' to have the last race run about four o'clock, to enable patrons to catch the mail train, it is safe to predict that next year's fixture will be a most successful one. Although the Mauaia Racing Club's i meeting was onlv a small one compared to other fixtures iu this district, there appeared to be more genuine triers than are seen at many metropolitan meetings in the North Island. This is the sort of race meeting we want to encourage. The racing was exceedingly interesting, and Mr. J. Croker (the judge) had some very close finishes to decide. There are some really good sports in the Manaia district, and the right sort of material to make a successful club. C'livc Matthews had a marvellous escape when llagalelle fell in the Flviug Handicap. Falling almost in the centre of the course, it appeared impossible for the other horses to avoid galloping over him, but to-the relief of all he escaped with an injured knee. The last race at the Manaia meeting was contested by a good Held, and almost everyone of the runners was well backed by its connections, which fad showed they were all after the prize. The winner turned up in Toddv. who started at sto 1 Mr. Pitt's gelding had previously won the Flying Handicap, and acted as runner-up to Slavey in the big race.
The outcome of an argument over the trotting races at the Stratford meeting was a match for ;L.jil a»ide over a twomile course, which was held at Stratford recently between All Night and Young Victor. The latter broke repeatedly, allowing Mr. Hayes' gelding to will fairly comfortably. Dolores fell while runninsr ill the Brighton Hurdles al the A.R.C. meeting, and it is feared the mare will have to lie treated to another spell before she can race again. This is rather unfortunate just on the eve of the winter racing. Immolation will in future be trained by her owner, Mr. R. Johnston, at Inglewood. Harvest, who won the two big events at the South Canterburv meeting,- is a four-yenr-ohl gehlhur b*v Claimmahl—liolden Vale, owned by Mr. F. Nclligan. The gelding paid a good price in each of his successes, which is rather surprising considering the way he has been running 'at various meetings in the. South recently. Mr. Stead's fillv fsolt is to be sent up to Hawke's Hay for a spoil, after which according to a 'Southern writer, the filly will visit Birkenhead. From this it niav be concluded that lsi.lt has finished her
