THE EXHIBITION DAY BY DAY
(By Telerraph.—Special Service). Christehurch, April J. All day there has beeu a surprisingly large eiowd at the Exhibition. consKLing for the most part oi visitors irom other parts of the colony. Mr. Faulkner, the blind organist of Christehurch, gave au organ recital in the afternoon before a large audience, and the Concert Hall was crowded for the orchestral performance in the evening. Mrs. Cower-Burns, a leading Christehurch singer, and Mr. .lohn I'rouse. of Wellington, were vocalists at a highly successful concert. The Hon. .las. Carrol. Native Minister, paid his first official visit t'p the Maori pa this afternoon since it lias been opened. The Turakina Maori girls gave an excellent programme of poi dances, and a dozen native men, many of them holiday-makers who are visiting Christehurch, gave some excellent Jiakas. Mr. Carrgll was welcomed to the pa with numerous speeches, and replied with a long address, in which he dwelt on the land troubles of the natives and the measures being
taken by tlie Covemment for their relief. Tlie Maori girls sang several tuneful chants and songs at the Minister's instigation. The dances were witnessed by several hundred spectators, who were very liberal with their applause. The departure of the Maori girls has been postponed till Saturday. There will be. no subsequent parties of natives staying at tins pa. The Canterbury Industrial Association is determined not to allow the educational value of the Exhibition to be wasted. A committee of the association made a tour of inspection of all Xew Zealand manufactured goods this afternoon, which they will follow up with a series of later inspections, at which notes will be taken of each industry with the object, where if is deemed desirable, of making recommendations to Parliament. There was a crowded attendance at Blanche Arral's second concert, in conjunction with the orchestra, to-night.
