NEW PLYMOUTH CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

FIRST ANNUAL GAMES. Hhe, flust gathering under Jhe auspices of the New Plymouth Caledonian Soaictv was held at Western Park yesterday, the first occasion on which the. new "round has been used for athletic purpose-. The threatening and showery WKatller affected the attendance, yet fully iifteen 'hundred people were present ' during the afternoon. The park was not in t'p-top order, being hardly rrailv vet for sport-, but Ihe energetic work of the committee had made the track passable, and a cycling competitor declared it to lie far better than n number on which lie had raced this year. The: sports arena has not yet been excavated to its full size. The arrangements made by the Society's ofikvals were good, except that greater facility in working would have been obtained had the secretary's and cornmil tee's booths been placed anywhere, but on opposite sides of the groimd-i. The delcrnvnal ion of the public to enter the liiiclosure eventually broke down the opposition of the olliccrs of this department, and their presence, and this constant coming and going of the children who chased Messrs Lints and Htagpoole from pillar .0 post, somewhat interfmed wdh the working; yet every event but the forced Handicap went oilto the tick of the clock, and childrens and novelty races were run in between the programme items. The Tarauaki l>ipc Band were in allendaucii. and were evidently untiring in their ell'orts, so far as they themselves were concerned. But it isn't tverylioily who can enjoy four or live hours' bagpipe and drum. The Highland events tided we'll, and were a novelty in New Plymouth, the dancing Of the juvcu/.cs being especially popular. In the atlletic events, tiie finishes were good in most instances, and 'the- cycling events also produced good racing'. ThcJ secretary ami all the officials deserve great credit for the conduct of the first gathering, the compatitors passing very favorable comment on the starting of Mr
