EASTER MONDAY SPORTS.
The principal attraction on Monday, and one that, weather being suitable, should attract a record attendance, is the lirst sports gathering of the New Plymouth Caledonian Society, on the Western Park grounds. An interesting afternoon's amusement is assured, the fields, especially in the cycle events, being large and representative of the whole length of the West Coast. In this respect, the society's programme has drawn a much better response from competitors than has been the experience of most of the Taranaki societies this season. A novel} - to -Sow Plymouth will be the Highland events (wo pipe music competitions and sis dancing contests, four of which are respectively for boys and girls in Highland costume.. For these events large entries are assured, and with the 'Taranaki Pipe Hand, there .will be, between 25 and 30 "kilties" in attendance. A number of novelty events should provide much amusement, and the two races open lo the high schools and public schools of Taranaki respectively promise keen competition. The children are to be particularly catered for bv a special committee, and a large ease of toys will be distributed amongst (he juvenile athletes of both sexes? A first-class baud of energetic officials and judge.-, the majority of the latter, by the way, having been selected from outMtlc New Plymouth, ensure that, the various events will be got oil' expeditiously, and the whole programme will be completed shortly after half-past four o'clock, the train for the South having been delayed to leave New Plymouth at a. quarter to six. The ground iL.df. which, though not yet. completed, will be in use for the first lime, should prove an attraction for many. The view of the arena from (he commanding terraces is one not equalled in any sports ground in the colony. Tiesoeietv has made special arrangements for seals lor ladies on the terrai.es. ami excellent afternoon tea will be dispensed bv .Air. Thomson, who will also have fruit and lolly stalls on the ground. One event ou (lie programme that is arousing much iuleivst is that for veterans, and already large entries have been received not less than twenty nld-time champions having expressed their intention of having a final Hut lev. The sports comniece punctually at half-past twelve, prior to which the Taranaki Pipe Band will march through the town. We trust the town public will roll up in large numbers and give the society a big lift towards the goal of its ambition —to make the New Plymonth Caledonian Society the leading gathering of its kind on the West Coast.
