He said he hoped to discuss the question of preference with Mr. Deakin, and arrange an agreement. Received 30th, 12.27 a.m. 0 . _., Ottawa, March 29. bir Wilfrid Laurier says the only question Canada is interested in, and the only one we intend to bring before the Conference, relates to trade. Upon that we have nothing new to offer, though, if it suits Great Britain to reciprocate, we are prepared to go a step further. Every nation composing ihc. British Empire must allow free choice of fiscal policy. Personally, he preferred universal free trade throughout the Empire, but at present it was impossible. Under no condition would he consent to Canada being drawn into the vortex of European militarism.
