Per Press Association. A OOWAIiDIA ASSAULT. Ohristclnirch, .March 27. Shortly after three.o'clock this afternoon a most cowardly assault is alleged to have been perpetrated bv a man named Thornley on John Bridgman, a hiHiicinl agent. Bridgman was talking lo Detective Bishop at the corner of Hereford and Rolombo streets, when Thornley came up and insulted him. Ilridgmaii retaliated with his fists. Thornley then knocked him down, hitting him a terrible blow on the face, cuumg open his cheek. Tliornley was arrested ;U id taken to the police station. SIA-fUiOU IX THE EXHIBITION. Christchurch, March 27. To-night the police raided the oyster saloon nl (he Exhibition, and seized 107 bottles of stout and beer. Two plainclothes constables, brought down specially from the North Island, are understood to have purchased drink at the saloon on two nights running. A summons is to be issued against the proprietor of the saloon for illegally sell- J ing liquor at the Exhibition. SIODDOX MRMOIUAI,. Timaru, March 27. At an adjourned meeting this evening it was resolved to set about collecting funds to provide a children's ward at Ihe hospital as a memorial to the lute Mr. It. J.
