NAPIER TRAMWAYS SCHEME

Napier, March 2.k The Napier Borough Council to-nig'it considered n report from Mr. Junto* liluck, A.M.LC.K,, who submitted the probable cost, of installing a system of electric lighting and traction, and the receipts tint, might reasonably Ik* ex» peeled. The most suitable route for a tramway was described as being from 1 lasting street to Port Ahuriri, also 1o the Hospital aud from Clew Square to the railway station, with a contingent service to Taradale. The approximate cost of construction was set down at U77,01)0 for traction lighting and power, and inclusive of tin? Taradale wervico, and £43,000 exclusive of that service. For a lighting scheme only, the estimate was .1'12,500. The estimated revenuo in the second year was .I*ll,Boo— and £3300 respectively for tha three schemes, giving an approximate net profit of UOOO, C 730, and £OOO respectively. The following resolution was passed:—"That it be nolilied that it is the intention of the Council of the Horongh of Napier to apply for nu imlcr-in-Couneil authorising the installation of electric lighting and the construction of a tramway, to be run on the lines of Mr. Black's report, and further that the llawkes Pay Council, Taradale I own .Hoard, and the Whareomaiaenui Reclamation Syndicate be informed what rtteps the Council are taking, so that they also may take the necessary steps in case it is wished to extend the trams Irom the borough to Taradale."
