THE BESSES' O' TH' BARN BAND

The "Besses" played to about three j thousand persons at the racecourse on Saturday afternoon, tlie ltecrcation tlrouuds being passed over oil account of the very heavy weather on the previous night having made the paths and ground about tlie trees too soil, and slippery. The playing came as a revelation, and every item elicited long rounds of applause. Particularly popular were "The Lost Chord'' and "Ora Pro Nobis." At night the Theatre ltoyal was crowded. The music was thrilling, -the applause deafening. Such playing will probably never be heard in New Plymouth in the next decade. If the audience was more, carried away by one selection than another it was in "Taiinhauser," the band's rendering of the great Atagnerian composition being marvellous ill its perfection. Even in tlie loudest fortissimo parts there was none of that trumpet blare that is so often the fault of band music. The following programme was given:—Alareb, "Australasian"; overture, "The Bohemian tlirl"; march, "'The Turkish Patrol"; Arbucleiiian polika (solo), Air. P. Allen, and encore "The Better Land"; selection, "Taiinhauser"; waltz, "Casino Tanze"; "Alarsellaise"; "The lieisha," "Lead, Kindly Light," "Cavalleria Kusticaua," and "(lems of British Song."
