The ex-Xew Zealimdcr played with his usual dash, accuracy and judgment. Dr, I'ockley was "oil"' Ids game.
Yesterday afternoon witnessed a great crowd at the New l'lvnioulli club's courts to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs I'ilzherbert. During the progress of the various matches against the Hcnni Club a nil the men's championship final, play was stayed for a while to allow players to gather round the vice-president (Dr Home) while he, on behalf of the Club, thanked Mr and Mrs Fitzherbcrl, for their good work and enthusiasm in the Club's affairs, in which they had both been so closely a-sociated for the last few years and presented Mrs Fitzherbcrt with a hot water heater and kettle inscribed, "il« W. L. Fitzherbert, from the members of the N.P.L.T. and CO. (Iteg.), 11)07," and a silver mounted purse. Mr Fitzherbert thanked the members on behalf of his H'fi: and stated that both he aml his wife would always look back to their stay in New Plymouth with the happiest remembrances. Three hearty cheers far .Mr aud .Mrs Fitzherbert wore given and play was then resumed. Chief interest centred in the decision for the local championship between J. C. Nicholson and E. HriHiths. The latter played, quite the game of his life and took the first, set (i—2. Nicholson turned the tables in the next set, winning by li-s'i; also the third set (i—4. in the fourth set (irilliths had the advantage for the early part, the score evenlunllv standing at 4 all, aud then 5 all, and much excitement was shown all round by the enthusiastic onlookers, as the play, wa of an exceptional high order. 'flic last game went to Nicholson, who thus again wins the championship and the "Williams" racquet, presented by Mr A. S. Ilassell. In the matches of llie Club's Second team against lienui some very close finishes resulted. Four games had to hc~abandoncd or postponed owing to tiie liglit failing. Of the 13 matches, played, New Plymouth woii 10. 'The lqtul games were: New Plymouth 130, Henui 114.
