SCHOOL BOOKS.

DISCUSSED lIY AUCKLAND BOARD. Per Press Association. Auckland, March 20. 'the* Chief Inspector of (Schools in the Auckland province, Mr D. Petrie, submitted a report to the Education Board to-day on the question of changing the school reader us, follows:—"! beg tot bring under the notice of the Board the desirability of making a, change in 'the principal series of readers now in use in the colony. It is a good few years since these books were introduced, and they have long since become stale, both to teachers and pupils. Knowing objections are invariably raised to all changes of works, I M'ould suggest that t he Board decide that a new set of principle readers shall be adopted in the beginning of the year of 1000, and that a committee of suitable composition be pet up at an early dale to examine and report upon the recent scries of school readers with a view to selecting the best that can be had for use in our schools." .Ml- Greendale, said tluit lie w;is wry strongly 'opposed to the chang'iiifr of school books. There should be some uniformity. The Minister seemed disposed to (lo something in the matter, and ho strongly opposed any addition to the charges east upon parents. Tiie chairman (Mr JJagnall) pointed out that the Department were about to issue a School Magazine, and he moved that the matter be deferred until the outcome of tlie Department's proposals in this regard was seen If Mr pane's recommendation were carried out, there would be ten years between the changes, that could not be called very' frequent changing of books.

The motion deferring the matter was agreed to.
